ReelShort vs ShortMax: the facts side by side
Short answer
ReelShort and ShortMax both sell a weekly plan, which makes them easier to compare than most short drama apps. On the US App Store (read October 2, 2026), ReelShort lists a $19.99 subscription valid for 7 days, holds 4.7 from 504K ratings and is rated 13+. ShortMax lists a Weekly Pass Pro at $9.99 and $19.99, holds 4.6 from 177K ratings and is rated 18+. ReelShort also plays in a browser, with 13 free episodes on the series we opened. ShortMax advertises offline downloads. We make a rival app, TotalShort, so we don't declare a winner.
There's no winner here, only the facts and a few scenarios that follow from them.
Our sources are the US App Store listings (read October 2, 2026), the Italian listings (September 30, 2026), and ReelShort's website and terms of use (October 6, 2026).

Weekly plans, compared fairly
Both apps say "weekly" in plain words, which is rarer than you'd think in this category. ReelShort's listing describes one subscription at $19.99, valid for 7 days, renewing automatically and billed weekly. ShortMax's listing shows a Weekly Pass Pro twice, once at $9.99 and once at $19.99, without explaining the difference.
That gives a clean comparison at the top end: $19.99 a week on both. At the bottom end, ShortMax has an entry at $9.99, while ReelShort's app listing has nothing lower. ReelShort's website, though, sold its Weekly VIP at $9.99 for the first week, then $19.99 a week, when we checked on October 6, 2026.
Kept for four weeks, that's 4 × $19.99 = $79.96 at the shared top price and 4 × $9.99 = $39.96 at ShortMax's lower entry. Forgotten for a year at $19.99, either one comes to 52 × $19.99 = $1,039.48. Those sums are arithmetic on listed prices, not predictions.
Paying per episode instead
ShortMax's one-time purchases start at $3.49, ReelShort's at $4.99, and both top out in the twenties. Neither listing says what a purchase buys in coins.
ReelShort's website fills that gap for its own app. On the series we opened, each locked episode cost 60 coins; the web store sold 315 coins for $2.99 and 1,100 for $9.99, roughly $0.60 and $0.55 an episode. Finishing that series (50 paid episodes) would take 3,000 coins. We have no matching ShortMax figure, because we didn't verify its coin prices. Our guide to how coins work explains how to do this sum yourself in any app.
Age ratings
This is the sharpest difference. ShortMax is 18+ in the US and 17+ in Italy. ReelShort is 13+ in the US and 12+ in Italy, but its own terms of use say the service is not for users under 18. So the store treats ReelShort as a teen app, and ReelShort's own contract doesn't.
If a teenager will use either, look at the series together and set purchase approval before anything else. The steps for both phones are in our guide to short drama app safety.
Where you can watch
ReelShort plays in a computer browser, with subtitles in 14 languages. A plan bought on its website is billed by Crazy Maple Studio to your card, so it won't appear in your Apple or Google subscriptions, and you cancel it with ReelShort.
We haven't checked ShortMax's website, so we can't tell you whether it plays episodes. Its listing does advertise offline downloads and Picture-in-Picture, which suit a phone on a plane or a commute with dead zones.
Catalog claims
ShortMax describes "50,000+ trending short dramas and movies in 19 languages". ReelShort says it adds new series daily and hundreds of new episodes each month. Both are the developers' own claims, and neither tells you whether the story you want is there. The free first episodes are the test.
Privacy labels
Both App Store privacy sections say identifiers are used to track you across other companies' apps and websites. ReelShort's says some data, including usage data, is linked to you. ShortMax's says user ID and device ID are linked to you for advertising and personalization. Read the label on the store page before you install.
Pick ReelShort if...
- A 13+ store rating matters for your household. Keep in mind its terms say 18.
- You want to watch on a laptop. The website plays episodes and shows the coin price of each locked one.
- You want a written free route. Ads or daily bonuses, per the Italian listing.
- You'd try a story where you pick the next move. Interactive stories are on the listing.
Pick ShortMax if...
- You want a weekly plan below $19.99 in the app. The $9.99 entry is on the listing.
- You start small. One-time purchases begin at $3.49.
- You watch offline. Downloads are advertised.
- All viewers are adults. The 18+ rating removes the teen question.

A third option: TotalShort (our app)
TotalShort is the app we make, so weigh this paragraph accordingly. It offers Italian short drama series, made with AI and labeled "AI series", in vertical one-minute episodes: stories like a hidden heiress in a hotel uniform on Lake Como or a bride who takes her sister's place under Mount Etna. The first 8 episodes of every series are free, plus 1 free episode a day per series. No sign-up: you start as a guest.
Coins never expire and nothing unlocks without your confirmation. In euro, an episode costs 30 coins (€0.30). VIP is €5.99 a week or €59.99 a year, auto-renewing and billed by Google Play, with no free trials that turn into charges. A US weekly price of $5.99 is set for the iPhone launch.
The honest limits: six series, no real actors, Italian audio with subtitles in 13 languages (some series also in English audio), Android only today, and no public rating yet because the app is brand new. Get TotalShort on Google Play; the iPhone version is coming soon. It doesn't play in a browser. Our home page ranking shows how it sits next to the other apps.
Frequently asked questions
Is ReelShort or ShortMax better?
There's no factual way to call one better, and we don't rank rival apps on taste. ReelShort is rated 13+, has more ratings (504K against 177K) and plays in a browser. ShortMax is 18+, lists a weekly plan from $9.99 and advertises offline downloads. Pick on the attribute that matters to you, then watch the free episodes in both before you subscribe to either.
Which is cheaper, ReelShort or ShortMax?
In the app, ShortMax lists a Weekly Pass Pro from $9.99, while ReelShort's subscription is $19.99 for 7 days (US App Store, October 2, 2026). ShortMax's one-time purchases also start lower, at $3.49 against $4.99. ReelShort's website sold a first week of VIP at $9.99, then $19.99. Prices differ by country and change, so the payment sheet is the number to trust.
Is ShortMax 18+ and ReelShort 13+?
Yes, on the US App Store: ShortMax 18+, ReelShort 13+. In Italy they're 17+ and 12+. ReelShort's terms of use, though, say the service is not for users under 18. If a teenager wants either, read that line, look at a few episodes together and switch on purchase approval on the phone.
Can I watch ReelShort or ShortMax on a computer?
ReelShort, yes: its website played episodes 1 to 13 free on the series we opened on October 6, 2026, then charged 60 coins per episode. We haven't verified a browser player for ShortMax. ShortMax's listing advertises offline downloads and Picture-in-Picture on the phone instead. Remember that a plan bought on ReelShort's website is cancelled on the website, not in your phone's subscription settings.
Does ReelShort or ShortMax have more languages?
ReelShort lists 22 interface languages and ShortMax 20 on the US App Store, both including Italian. ShortMax also says its titles come in 19 languages and promises multilingual subtitles and professional dubbing. Interface language isn't the same as audio, so check the player on a free first episode before paying.
How do I cancel ReelShort or ShortMax?
For plans bought in the app, cancel with Apple or Google. iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, choose the app, Cancel Subscription. Android: Google Play, Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, choose the app, Cancel subscription. Deleting the app cancels nothing. A ReelShort plan bought on its website is cancelled from your ReelShort account. Step-by-step help is in our cancellation guide.
