How much does it cost to finish a short drama series?

Short answer

The cheapest place to finish a short drama series is TotalShort, our app: it's free to watch with no sign-up, and its optional VIP is €5.99 a week, the lowest weekly plan we found in euro. On other apps, the cheapest way is usually one week of a weekly plan, used fully and cancelled: from $4.99 (VibeShort) or $5.99 (GoodShort) on the US App Store, $19.99 on ReelShort and NetShort. Paying with coins can cost more: one ReelShort series we checked needed 3,000 coins for its 50 locked episodes.

A short drama series runs for dozens of one-minute episodes, and on most apps only the first ones are free. So the real question before you start isn't "is this app free?" but "what will the rest of this story cost me?". There are three ways to get to the last episode, and they cost very different amounts.

TotalShort is the app we make, so we're not neutral. It's free to watch, on its website and in the Android app, and watching TotalShort free needs no sign-up. The rest of this guide is about the apps that charge as you go.

Three ways to reach the final episode

1. The free route. Free opening episodes, ads, daily bonuses, or a single free episode every 24 hours. It costs money only if you get impatient. CandyJar, for example, gives one free episode every 24 hours: a 60-episode series takes two months that way.

2. Coins, episode by episode. You buy a pack of coins and spend a set number per episode. It's the most flexible route and the easiest to overspend on, because an episode priced at "60 coins" doesn't feel like money. Our guide to how coins work shows how to turn coins back into dollars.

3. One week of a weekly plan. A VIP or weekly pass unlocks the catalog for seven days. If you can binge the series within the week, this is usually the cheapest paid route. The catch: it renews by itself, so the saving only holds if you cancel in time.

A worked example: one ReelShort series

On ReelShort's website, on October 6, 2026, the series we opened had 50 paid episodes after the free ones, at 60 coins each. That's 3,000 coins to finish it. Coins came in packs such as 315 for $2.99 and 1,100 for $9.99, so buying it in small packs came to about $30.

The website's VIP was $9.99 for the first week, then $19.99 a week. Finishing the same series inside that first week, then cancelling, was the cheaper route by a wide margin. Leave the renewal on for a month by mistake, and the weekly plan becomes the expensive one.

The numbers change per series and per app, but the method doesn't: count the locked episodes, check the coins per episode on the unlock screen, and compare with one week of the plan.

What one week costs, app by app

On the US App Store, in dollars

The lowest weekly plan on each US listing, read October 2 to 15, 2026:

App Lowest weekly plan listed
VibeShort $4.99 (Weekly Pass Pro)
GoodShort $5.99
DramaWave $7.99
StoryReel $7.99 (Weekly Pass Pro)
ShortMax $9.99 (Weekly Pass Pro)
Shortical $9.99
FlickReels $12.99
ReelShort $19.99 (VIP, 7 days)
NetShort $19.99
CandyJar $19.99
DramaBox Membership $5.99, period not stated

On the Italian App Store, in euro

The same comparison in euro, from the Italian App Store on October 19, 2026. It's the one place where every app, TotalShort included, shows a weekly price in the same currency, which is why our score uses it for the cost criterion.

App Lowest weekly plan
TotalShort (our app) €5.99 VIP (Google Play)
GoodShort €6.99
FlickReels €6.99
CandyJar €6.99
NetShort, ShortMax, StoryReel, Shortical, VibeShort €9.99
ReelShort €11.99
DramaWave €14.99
DramaBox "Abbonamento" €8.99, period not stated

The two tables don't line up exactly: VibeShort is the cheapest in dollars but €9.99 in Italy, and FlickReels is the other way round. Prices are set per country, so always trust the payment sheet on your own phone.

How to finish a series without overpaying

  1. Watch the free episodes first. If the story doesn't hook you by then, it won't at episode 40.
  2. Count what's left. The episode list shows how many are locked.
  3. Pick the route. A few episodes left: coins. Most of the series and a free evening or two: one week of the plan.
  4. Set a reminder to cancel. Do it the day you subscribe, in Apple or Google settings, not by deleting the app. Our guide to cancelling a short drama subscription has the steps.
  5. Turn off auto-unlock where the app has it, so coins aren't spent the moment an episode ends. CandyJar's help center says its Auto-Unlock is on by default.

On TotalShort, every unlock asks for your confirmation and coins never expire, so there's nothing to switch off.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to finish a short drama?

It depends on the route. Free routes cost nothing but time. With a weekly plan, finishing a series you binge in a few days costs one week: from $4.99 or $5.99 on the cheapest US listings to $19.99 on ReelShort and NetShort. With coins it varies: one ReelShort series we checked needed 3,000 coins for 50 episodes. TotalShort, our app, is free to watch, and its optional VIP is €5.99 a week.

Is it cheaper to buy coins or a weekly pass?

For a few episodes, coins are cheaper and don't renew. For most of a series, a single week of a weekly pass usually wins, as long as you finish within the seven days and cancel before it renews. The break-even point is simple: multiply the locked episodes by the coins per episode, convert to money with your pack's price, and compare with the weekly price.

Which short drama app is cheapest to finish a series on?

TotalShort, our app, is free to watch with no sign-up, and its VIP (€5.99 a week) is the lowest weekly plan we found in euro. On the US App Store, VibeShort ($4.99) and GoodShort ($5.99) list the lowest weekly plans. Our cheapest short drama apps page lists every app by weekly price.

Why do short drama apps charge per episode?

Because the format is built on cliffhangers: each episode ends just as something happens, and the first ones are free to get you hooked. Charging per episode, in coins, turns that hook into revenue. Sensor Tower estimated about $700 million in global in-app revenue for short drama apps in the first quarter of 2025.

Can I finish a series for free?

Sometimes, slowly. CandyJar gives one free episode every 24 hours, some apps let you watch ads or collect daily bonuses for coins, and FreeReels on Android runs on ads. TotalShort, our app, is free to watch from the start. Sites that offer every series free are usually unofficial copies, which is a common route to scams.

Does deleting the app stop the weekly charge?

No. A subscription bought through the App Store or Google Play keeps renewing until you cancel it in your Apple or Google account settings. Deleting the app only removes it from your phone. If you paid on the app's website, cancel on that website.
