DramaBox vs ShortMax: how the two compare
Short answer
DramaBox and ShortMax are both rated 18+ on the US App Store (17+ in Italy), so the choice comes down to pricing and features. Read on October 2, 2026, DramaBox holds 4.8 from 867K ratings and lists Membership at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 without stating a period. ShortMax holds 4.6 from 177K ratings and lists a Weekly Pass Pro at $9.99 and $19.99, with one-time purchases from $3.49 to $24.99. ShortMax advertises offline downloads and 20 interface languages; DramaBox has 16. We don't pick a winner, and we disclose that we make a rival app, TotalShort.
We compare rivals on facts we read, not on which stories we liked, and we never decide a winner between two apps we don't own. DramaBox and ShortMax happen to make that easy, because on the most important question for many households, the age rating, they are identical.
The figures come from the US App Store listings read on October 2, 2026, the Italian listings read on September 30, 2026, DramaBox's website read on October 6, 2026, and Sensor Tower's July 2025 report.

Prices vary by country and over time. What Apple or Google shows on the payment sheet is the real price.
The billing period question
ShortMax names its plan "Weekly Pass Pro", so the period is in the product name. The listing shows it twice, at $9.99 and at $19.99, without explaining the difference. It could be two tiers or two offers; the listing doesn't say, and we haven't seen inside either. Four weeks at the lower price is 4 × $9.99 = $39.96; at the higher one, 4 × $19.99 = $79.96.
DramaBox's Membership entries don't carry a period at all. The listing says they renew automatically unless you turn renewal off at least 24 hours before the period ends, and leaves the length of the period to the purchase sheet. That makes the $5.99 entry hard to judge. If it turned out to be weekly, four weeks would be 4 × $5.99 = $23.96; if it's longer, it's cheaper still. Treat that as arithmetic, not a quote.
The safe habit on either app is the same: read the period on the sheet, and put a reminder the day before the first renewal.
One-off purchases
If you'd rather not subscribe, both sell single purchases that don't renew. ShortMax's range starts lower, at $3.49, and has six steps up to $24.99. DramaBox shows three special offers at $4.99, $9.99 and $19.99. Neither listing says how many coins or episodes each purchase brings, so the cost per episode only appears inside the app.
ShortMax's listing points to a "Top-Up Agreement" for its purchases. We didn't read it, so we can't tell you what it says about leftover balances. More on how in-app currencies behave is in our guide to how coins work.
Features each listing advertises
ShortMax's description is long on player features: HD streaming, adjustable playback speed, Picture-in-Picture, offline downloads, a personalized watchlist and AI recommendations. It also promises multilingual subtitles and professional dubbing, and claims 50,000+ titles. Those are the developer's words; we haven't counted the catalog.
DramaBox's US listing mentions HD streaming, recommendations based on what you watch, playlists and favorites, and ad-free viewing as a subscription feature. The Italian listing adds that new series arrive every week.
If you fly often or have patchy signal, the offline download on ShortMax's list is a concrete difference. Check that it works on the series you want before you pay.
Ratings and scale
DramaBox's 867K US ratings are nearly five times ShortMax's 177K, and its average is higher, 4.8 against 4.6. On the Italian store both sit at 4.6. Sensor Tower reports DramaBox at about $120 million in in-app revenue for Q1 2025 and about $450 million cumulative; the report we use gives no ShortMax figure. Ratings show how users feel overall. They don't tell you which app has the series a friend sent you.
Privacy labels
ShortMax's App Store privacy section says identifiers are used to track you, and that data such as user ID and device ID is linked to you for advertising and personalization. We didn't record DramaBox's privacy label, so we can't put them side by side. Read the label on the store page before installing either.
Pick DramaBox if...
- You care about a large rating pool. 867K US ratings is the most among the apps we track.
- You want the lowest recurring price on a listing. $5.99 is there, once you've confirmed the period on the purchase sheet.
- You want new series every week. That's what the Italian listing promises.
Pick ShortMax if...
- You want the period in plain sight. "Weekly" is in the plan's name.
- You want small one-off purchases. The range starts at $3.49.
- You watch offline. Downloads are on the feature list.
- You need more interface languages. 20 against 16.
- You want Picture-in-Picture or speed control. Both are advertised.
Things that are the same
Both are 18+ in the US and 17+ in Italy. Both bill through Apple or Google in the app, and both subscriptions are cancelled in your store settings, not by deleting the app. Both list Italian among their interface languages, without promising that every series is dubbed. For more apps on the same terms, see our DramaBox review, ShortMax review and the list of apps like DramaBox.
A third option: TotalShort (our app)
We make TotalShort, so this is our pitch, with its limits attached. It's an app of Italian short drama series, made with AI and labeled "AI series" on every title, in vertical episodes of about a minute. The first 8 episodes of every series are free, then 1 free episode a day per series. You start as a guest with no sign-up, coins never expire, and nothing unlocks without your confirmation.
In euro: 30 coins (€0.30) an episode, and 120 coins (€1.20) to finish a 12-episode series once the 8 free ones are done. VIP is €5.99 a week or €59.99 a year, billed by Google Play, with no free trials that turn into charges. The Play listing rates it Teen, a lower rating than DramaBox's or ShortMax's 18+, though that is a different store's scale.
The limits: six series, no live actors, Italian audio with subtitles in 13 languages (some series also have English audio), Android only for now, and too new to have a public rating. Get TotalShort on Google Play; the iPhone version is coming soon. It does not play in a browser. See where it sits in our ranking.
Frequently asked questions
Is DramaBox or ShortMax better?
We don't rank them, and nothing in the listings settles it. DramaBox has more ratings (867K against 177K) and a higher US average (4.8 against 4.6). ShortMax names a weekly plan, starts one-off purchases at $3.49, and advertises offline downloads and 20 interface languages. Both are 18+. Decide which of those facts matters to you, then watch the free opening of a series in each before paying.
Which is cheaper, DramaBox or ShortMax?
It depends on a number DramaBox doesn't print. Its Membership starts at $5.99 but the listing gives no period. ShortMax's Weekly Pass Pro is listed at $9.99 and $19.99. For one-off purchases, ShortMax starts lower at $3.49 against DramaBox's $4.99. All prices are from the US App Store on October 2, 2026, and they change by country, so read the payment sheet before confirming.
Are DramaBox and ShortMax for adults only?
On the US App Store both are rated 18+, and in Italy both are 17+. That's the store's guidance on content. If a younger person uses the phone anyway, turn on purchase controls first: Screen Time on iPhone, purchase verification or Family Link on Android. Our guide to app safety walks through both.
Can I download ShortMax or DramaBox episodes offline?
ShortMax's App Store description lists offline downloads among its features, along with Picture-in-Picture and adjustable speed. DramaBox's US listing doesn't mention offline viewing in the text we read. Check inside the app before paying for either, because a feature on a list doesn't always cover every series. If offline viewing is the deciding factor, test a download on the free episodes first.
Do DramaBox and ShortMax have dubbing?
ShortMax's listing promises multilingual subtitles and professional dubbing. DramaBox's listing doesn't make the same promise in the text we read. Both list Italian as an interface language, which is about menus, not audio. Open the free first episode and check the audio and subtitle options before spending anything. Settings can differ from series to series within the same app.
How do I cancel DramaBox or ShortMax?
Both are billed through Apple or Google when you buy in the app. On iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, choose the app, Cancel Subscription. On Android: Google Play, Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, choose the app, Cancel subscription. Uninstalling doesn't cancel. You keep access until the paid period ends. Our cancellation guide covers refunds too.
