How coins work in short drama apps

Short answer

Coins are a virtual currency you buy with real money and spend to unlock episodes. On the series we checked on October 6, 2026, an episode cost 60 coins on ReelShort's website (about $0.55 to $0.60 with small packs), 50 coins on NetShort's (about $0.50) and 46 to 56 coins on GoodShort's. VIP is a renewing pass that replaces coins for a period. Watch for auto-unlock (on by default in CandyJar, impossible to switch off in Pocket FM), bonus coins that expire (VibeShort), and coins lost when you close an account (Shortical, FlareFlow).

Coins exist because "60 coins" feels smaller than "60 cents". Once you can turn coins back into money in your head, short drama apps get much easier to judge.

We use its prices as an example where it helps, in euro, kept apart from dollar figures.

Coins and VIP: the two ways to pay

Almost every short drama app sells two things.

Coins are bought in packs through Apple, Google or the app's website. Each locked episode has a coin price, and you spend coins to open it. Nothing renews.

VIP (also called Membership, Weekly Pass or Unlimited) unlocks the catalog for a period, usually a week, sometimes a month or a year. It renews automatically until you cancel, and some apps show more than one price for the same plan.

Which one is cheaper depends on how much you watch. A few episodes favor coins; a one-week binge can favor VIP if you cancel in time.

What one episode really costs

The App Store usually shows pack prices but not how many coins each pack holds or what an episode costs. Some apps' websites fill the gap. These are the figures we read ourselves on October 6, 2026, on one series per app. Prices can vary by series, by episode and over time.

App Coins per locked episode (series we checked) Coin packs seen Rough cost per episode
ReelShort (website) 60 315 coins for $2.99; 1,100 for $9.99; 20,000 for $99.99 (bonus included) about $0.60, $0.55 and $0.30
NetShort (website) 50 1,000 coins for $9.99; 1,300 for $12.99; 5,000 for $49.99 about $0.50
GoodShort (website) 46 to 56, varying by episode about one cent per coin about $0.45 to $0.55
Pocket FM (help center examples, audio) 8, 9 or 10 not stated per pack on the App Store only visible in the app

GoodShort's App Store listing adds coin packs from 500 coins at $4.99 to 2,500 coins at $24.99 (read October 2, 2026).

Doing the sum yourself

For any app, three numbers turn coins into money:

  1. Pack price ÷ coins in the pack = price of one coin.
  2. Price of one coin × coins for one episode = price of one episode.
  3. Price of one episode × locked episodes left in the series = price of finishing it.

Take ReelShort's website. One coin from the 1,100-coin pack costs about $0.009, and 60 coins makes about $0.55 an episode. The series we opened had 50 paid episodes, so finishing it took 3,000 coins. The website's first week of VIP cost $9.99, then $19.99 a week. If you'd finish within seven days, the first VIP week costs less than 3,000 coins in packs, as long as you cancel before the renewal.

Settings that spend coins for you

Two apps we cover have an auto-unlock feature. It's the usual reason a balance empties fast.

CandyJar: on by default

CandyJar's help center says Auto-Unlock "uses your Coins to open the next episode automatically when you finish one", and it's switched on by default. You can turn it off per series: More > My Wallet > Series on Auto-Unlock. If you'd rather approve every spend, do this before you buy your first pack.

Pocket FM: no off switch

Pocket FM, an audio series app, uses the same model. Its help center says there's no option to turn off Auto Unlock for now. It suggests checking the Coins Spent tab in My Store and use the Sleep Timer, since coins often go when episodes keep playing after you fall asleep. Coin purchases are final under its terms, and its terms say coin prices may differ by market or user group while it tests prices.

Coins that expire or disappear

Not every coin is equal, and some don't last.

Bonus coins that expire. VibeShort's terms split your balance into "gold coins", which you buy, and "bonus", which you earn. Gold coins are spent first, then bonus, and bonus has an expiration date shown in My Wallet. Purchased coins have no expiry in its terms, but they can't be refunded.

Earned coins on ReelShort. ReelShort's Italian listing says you can continue by watching ads or collecting daily bonuses. Some user reviews claim coins earned that way expire after a period without use, but the official description doesn't say so, and we couldn't confirm it. Check inside the app before saving them up.

Coins lost with the account. Shortical's terms say virtual currency has no real-world value, isn't refundable and is forfeited if the account is closed. FlareFlow's terms treat virtual currency as final and lost when an account or the service closes. DramaWave's terms describe coins as a license, with no money back for unused coins when an account closes. FlickReels' user agreement says the company can modify or reset virtual currency.

Coins that last. Pocket FM says its coins never expire. On TotalShort, coins never expire either.

The rule: buy coins for what you'll watch soon and spend them before deleting an account.

Coins vs VIP: when each one makes sense

Coins tend to suit you if you follow one or two series, watch a few episodes at a time, or want to stop the moment a story loses you. VIP tends to suit you if you binge several series in a week and cancel right after.

In euro, TotalShort gives a clean example, because both prices are fixed. An episode is 30 coins, or €0.30, and VIP is €5.99 a week, so VIP only pays off above about 20 paid episodes a week (€5.99 ÷ €0.30 ≈ 20). With 8 free episodes per series and 1 free episode a day per series, most people never get there.

For apps where you can't see the coin price per episode before buying, don't buy VIP blind. Open a locked episode, read its coin price, then compare. Our guide to the cheapest short drama apps lists the weekly plans each listing shows, and the free short drama apps page covers how far you get without paying.

Habits that keep coin spending in check

  • Turn off auto-unlock where the app allows it.
  • Lock in-app purchases on your phone before installing, as described in our safety guide.
  • Never buy coins from a site that isn't the app's own domain, and ignore "free coins" generators.
  • If you take a VIP week for one series, set a reminder to cancel. Our cancellation guide has the steps.

TotalShort, our app, keeps coins simple: 30 coins (€0.30) an episode, coins never expire, and nothing unlocks without your confirmation, so there's no auto-unlock to switch off. The first 8 episodes of every series are free, then 1 free episode a day per series; finishing a 12-episode series after that is 4 × 30 = 120 coins (€1.20). VIP is €5.99 a week or €59.99 a year, billed by Google Play, with no free trials that turn into charges. The catalog is small, six Italian AI-made series with no live actors, and it's Android only for now: get TotalShort on Google Play; the iPhone version is coming soon. See the full ranking.

Frequently asked questions

How much is one coin worth in a short drama app?

It depends on the app and the pack. On ReelShort's website, a coin cost about $0.009 to $0.0095 in the two smallest packs and about $0.005 in the $99.99 pack, thanks to bonus coins. NetShort's website worked out at about a cent per coin, and GoodShort's at about a cent too. Divide the pack price by the coins it contains to get your own figure.

Is VIP cheaper than buying coins?

Only if you watch a lot within the VIP period. A weekly pass beats coins when the episodes you'd unlock cost more in coins than the pass. On ReelShort's website, finishing one 50-episode paid stretch took 3,000 coins, more than a $9.99 first VIP week. For a few episodes, coins are usually cheaper, and they don't renew on their own.

Why do my coins disappear so fast?

Usually because of auto-unlock, which opens the next episode and spends coins without asking. CandyJar turns it on by default (you can turn it off in More > My Wallet > Series on Auto-Unlock), and Pocket FM doesn't let you switch it off. Episodes in some apps also cost different amounts, so a series can get pricier as it goes. Check the coin history if the app has one.

Do short drama coins expire?

Some do. VibeShort's bonus coins expire on a date shown in My Wallet, while purchased gold coins don't have an expiry in its terms. Shortical and FlareFlow say coins are lost if the account closes. Pocket FM and TotalShort say coins never expire. ReelShort reviews mention expiring earned coins, but its official description doesn't confirm that.

Can I get a refund for coins I didn't use?

Rarely. Many apps' terms call coin purchases final: Pocket FM, Shortical and VibeShort among them, with VibeShort making an exception only if a product is unusable. For coins bought through Apple or Google, you can still ask the store for a refund on reportaproblem.apple.com or through Google Play, and the store decides. Website purchases go to the app's support.

Can I buy coins on the app's website?

Some apps sell them there: ReelShort, NetShort and GoodShort sold coins on their websites when we checked on October 6, 2026, and Shortical and CandyJar sell plans online. Prices can differ from the App Store. Only buy on the app's official domain, and remember that a website purchase is refunded and cancelled with the app company, not with Apple or Google.
