Playlet review: is it safe, is it free, and what does the subscription cost?
Short answer
Playlet is a real short drama app published by MicroShowtime Limited. Its US App Store listing (read October 15, 2026) shows 4.60 stars from 46,857 ratings and a 16+ age rating. Purchases include a Weekly Pass at $17.99, $19.99 or $24.99, a Monthly Pass at $49.99, and coin packs from 1,000 coins for $4.99 to 10,000 for $49.99, about half a cent per coin on every pack. The download is free, but the listing doesn't say how many episodes are free or what an episode costs in coins. Passes auto-renew until cancelled.

Playlet is a legitimate app from a named publisher, with tens of thousands of ratings and every purchase listed on its store page. What the listing leaves out is the part most people search for: how much you can watch before paying, and how many coins an episode takes. So treat the download as free and everything after the first lock as a decision you make with the payment sheet in front of you.
What Playlet is and who publishes it
Playlet, listed on the US App Store as "Playlet: Watch Short Dramas&TV", is a streaming app for vertical short drama series. The seller is MicroShowtime Limited. The app first appeared on December 4, 2023, and version 3.29.0 came out on September 25, 2026, so it is actively maintained. It needs iOS 15 or later.
The genres in the description are the usual ones for this format: urban drama, billionaire romance, female lead stories, romantic comedy, werewolf alpha, family drama, family feuds and revenge. The developer says its shows are "produced by Hollywood star teams" with "local screenwriters". That is the company's own description; we have no way to check who works on each series, so read it as marketing rather than a credit list.

How much Playlet costs
Prices on the US App Store listing
| Purchase | US price |
|---|---|
| Weekly Pass | $17.99 |
| Weekly Pass | $19.99 |
| Weekly Pass | $24.99 (listed twice) |
| Special offer | $17.99 |
| Monthly Pass | $49.99 |
| 1,000 coins | $4.99 |
| 2,000 coins | $9.99 |
| 3,000 coins | $14.99 |
| 10,000 coins | $49.99 |
The Weekly Pass appears at three prices, and the $24.99 line shows up twice. The listing doesn't explain why. It could be regional pricing, an introductory price, or different tiers, but we haven't seen what each includes, so we won't guess. The "Special offer" at $17.99 isn't described either. The payment sheet inside the app shows the price and the billing period you are actually agreeing to, and that is the number that counts. Prices also change by country and over time.
The coin packs are easier to read. Every pack works out to roughly $0.005 per coin, so buying 10,000 coins at once doesn't make each coin cheaper than buying 1,000. A bigger pack only means more money committed up front. What a coin buys is another matter: the listing doesn't say how many coins unlock an episode. If coins are new to you, our guide on how coins work in short drama apps explains the general model.
Example: weekly vs monthly over four weeks
Our own arithmetic, using the US listing prices and assuming you'd keep a pass for about a month:
- Lowest Weekly Pass, four renewals: 4 × $17.99 = $71.96.
- Highest Weekly Pass, four renewals: 4 × $24.99 = $99.96.
- One Monthly Pass: $49.99.
A month is a little longer than four weeks, so this slightly flatters the weekly option, and the monthly pass still comes out $21.97 cheaper than the lowest weekly price. If you know you'll watch for several weeks, the Monthly Pass is the line to look for. If you only want to finish one series, a single week, cancelled right after purchase, caps what you spend. Our cheapest short drama apps page compares listed prices across apps.
What's free on Playlet
Installing and opening Playlet costs nothing. Past that point, the listing is silent: it doesn't say how many episodes per series are free, how many coins an episode costs, or whether ads or daily rewards unlock anything. We haven't verified those numbers, so we won't print any.
The description does say the subscription is there "to unlock dramas and sweet discounts", which tells you the paid pass is the main route to full series. The honest way to find out what you get free is to start the series you care about and note where the first locked episode is. Then decide whether the rest is worth a pass or some coins.
If you want apps that state their free allowance up front, see our list of free short drama apps. Sites or chat channels offering every Playlet series free are not run by the publisher and are a common route to scams.
Is Playlet legit and safe
Playlet is legit in the plain sense: a named seller on the official App Store, an app that has been there since late 2023 with a recent update, and 4.60 stars from 46,857 US ratings. Payments go through Apple, so your card details stay with Apple, not with the app.
Ratings measure how people feel about an app overall. They don't tell you whether a weekly pass suits your habits. Three points from the listing are worth weighing:
- Age rating. The App Store page rates Playlet 16+. That's the store's guidance on content, and it means the app isn't aimed at younger teens.
- Auto-renewal. Every pass renews automatically. The description says Apple charges within 24 hours before the current period ends, and that you need to cancel at least 24 hours before that.
- Unexplained price lines. Three Weekly Pass prices plus a special offer make it easy to confirm something more expensive than you meant to. Read the sheet.
Before installing, check that the store page names MicroShowtime Limited. On a shared phone, Apple's Screen Time purchase controls and Google Play's purchase verification put a gate in front of in-app purchases. Our guide on whether short drama apps are safe has a fuller checklist.
How to cancel Playlet
A Playlet pass bought on iPhone is a subscription with Apple, so you cancel it in your Apple ID settings, not inside the app. Deleting Playlet doesn't stop the renewals.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Pick the app, then Cancel Subscription.
Android
- Open Google Play and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Pick the app, then Cancel subscription.
Deleting the app does not cancel anything. If you paid on the app's website, cancel on that website.
Apple's own instructions are on its cancel a subscription page. If you subscribed on Android, Google's steps are on the Google Play subscriptions page.
Timing matters with Playlet. The listing says Apple bills within the 24 hours before your period ends. Cancel at least a day ahead, or you may pay for one more week or month. After cancelling, reopen the subscriptions list: you should see an expiry date instead of a renewal date. You keep access until then.
Refunds are requested from Apple through its refund page, not from Playlet. Coin packs are one-time purchases and never appear in the subscription list. Our cancellation guide covers the same steps for other apps.
Who Playlet suits
- Steady watchers who'd rather pay monthly. The $49.99 Monthly Pass is the clearest value on the listing if you watch for more than a few weeks.
- People who prefer coins over subscriptions. Coin packs don't renew, and the per-coin price stays the same from $4.99 up, so you can buy small without a penalty.
- Fans of billionaire romance, werewolf and revenge plots. Those genres are named directly in the description.
- Viewers who use the app in Arabic, Indonesian, Thai or Turkish, among the 11 languages listed.
It suits less well anyone under 16, given the rating, and anyone who wants to know exactly what's free before installing. Looking at similar apps? Our reviews of StardustTV and Kalos TV cover two apps with comparable weekly prices.
Playlet vs TotalShort
TotalShort is our app, made by our company, so weigh this section with that in mind. On size and reach, Playlet is far ahead.
| Playlet | TotalShort (our app) | |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog | Not stated on the listing | 6 series |
| Made with AI | Not stated; developer cites "Hollywood star teams" | Yes, every series labeled "AI series" (no real actors) |
| Free episodes | Not stated on the listing | First 8 of every series, plus 1 free a day per series |
| Platforms | iPhone (US App Store, read for this review) | Android (Google Play) only; iPhone version coming soon; no web player |
| Ratings | 4.60 from 46,857 (US App Store) | Brand new, no public rating yet |
| Pricing | US dollars: Weekly Pass from $17.99, Monthly Pass $49.99 | Euro: VIP €5.99 a week or €59.99 a year; 30 coins (€0.30) an episode |
Playlet wins on track record, ratings, an iPhone app you can download today, and a monthly pass option. TotalShort's difference is a stated free allowance on every series, coins that never expire, a confirmation before every unlock, and no sign-up to start. Its stories are set in Italy, with Italian audio and subtitles in 13 languages including English; some series also have English audio. After the 8 free episodes, finishing a 12-episode series costs 4 × 30 = 120 coins, or €1.20.

Frequently asked questions
Is Playlet a safe app?
Playlet is published by MicroShowtime Limited on the official App Store, with 4.60 stars from 46,857 US ratings, read October 15, 2026. Purchases go through Apple, so the app never handles your card. The real risks are financial: passes renew automatically, the listing shows three different Weekly Pass prices, and coin spending adds up. Install only from the official store, read the payment sheet before confirming, and turn on purchase controls if others use your phone.
Is Playlet free?
The download is free, but Playlet is built around paid passes and coins. The US listing doesn't state how many episodes per series are free, and we haven't verified a number. Start the series you want and note where the first locked episode appears. Beyond that point you'll need a Weekly Pass, the Monthly Pass or coins, which start at 1,000 for $4.99. Free uploads on other sites aren't run by the publisher and can lead to scams.
How much is the Playlet subscription?
On the US App Store, read October 15, 2026, the Weekly Pass is listed at $17.99, $19.99 and $24.99, plus a "Special offer" at $17.99. The Monthly Pass is $49.99. The listing doesn't explain why the weekly price varies. Over four weeks, the lowest weekly price adds up to $71.96, so the Monthly Pass is cheaper if you watch steadily. Prices vary by country, and the payment sheet shows what you'll actually pay.
How much do Playlet coins cost?
The US listing shows four packs: 1,000 coins for $4.99, 2,000 for $9.99, 3,000 for $14.99 and 10,000 for $49.99. Each one works out to about $0.005 per coin, so larger packs don't lower the per-coin price. The listing doesn't say how many coins an episode costs, which is the number you need to judge value. Check the unlock price on a locked episode before buying a pack.
Who makes Playlet?
The App Store lists the seller as MicroShowtime Limited, and the developer website as playlet.com. The app was released on December 4, 2023, and the latest version we saw, 3.29.0, was published on September 25, 2026. The description says its shows are produced by "Hollywood star teams" with "local screenwriters"; that's the company's claim, and the listing doesn't name studios or cast.
What age is Playlet for?
The US App Store page rates Playlet 16+. That rating reflects the store's assessment of the content, so it isn't designed for younger teenagers. If a teen uses your phone, Apple's Screen Time settings can block in-app purchases and limit apps by age rating. On Android, Google Play's purchase verification asks for authentication before every purchase, which stops a pass being bought with a stray tap.
How do I cancel Playlet?
On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Playlet and tap Cancel Subscription. Do it at least 24 hours before the period ends, because the listing says Apple charges within the last 24 hours. Deleting the app doesn't cancel anything. You keep access until the expiry date shown in the list. Coin packs are one-time purchases and won't appear there.
