Free short drama apps: what each one really gives away

Short answer

Eleven short drama apps have a free route you can check in an official source. TotalShort (our app, Android) gives the first 8 episodes of every series free plus 1 a day per series. GoodShort and NetShort played 9 free episodes on their websites, ReelShort and Shortical 13, FlickReels 10, VibeShort 6. CandyJar gives 1 free episode every 24 hours with no ads. PineDrama lists no in-app purchases on the US App Store, and FreeReels on Google Play says it is always free and runs on ads. Checked October 2–15, 2026.

Eleven short drama apps have a free route you can confirm in an official source: TotalShort, GoodShort, ReelShort, NetShort, FlickReels, Shortical, CandyJar, PineDrama, StoryReel, VibeShort and FreeReels. "Free" means something different on each one: a fixed number of opening episodes, ads in exchange for episodes, or one episode a day. The other ten are ordered by how many ratings they have on the US App Store, with no taste ranking.

The free short drama apps, checked

1. TotalShort (our app)

We make it, so read this entry knowing that. On Google Play (listing read October 15, 2026, last updated October 14, 2026), TotalShort gives you the first 8 episodes of every series free, plus 1 free episode a day per series. You start as a guest, with no sign-up. After that, a paid episode is 30 coins (€0.30), coins never expire, and nothing unlocks until you confirm. Finishing a 12-episode series after the free ones costs 4 × 30 = 120 coins, or €1.20, or four days of waiting.

The honest limits: six series, all made with AI and labeled "AI series", no real actors, Italian settings and audio with subtitles in 13 languages, Android only for now (iPhone version coming soon), and no public rating yet.

Best for: finishing short series for free if you don't mind waiting a day per episode. TotalShort review

2. GoodShort

GoodShort has 4.9 from 527K ratings on the US App Store (read October 2, 2026). Its listing doesn't say how many episodes are free, but its website does, series by series: on October 6, 2026 we opened Don's Back: No One Touches His Daughter (51 episodes) as a visitor, and episodes 1 to 9 were listed at 0 coins, with the next ones at 46 to 56 coins. The interface comes in 14 languages, Italian not among them.

Best for: checking exactly where the paywall sits before you install anything. GoodShort review

3. ReelShort

ReelShort has 4.7 from 504K US ratings (October 2, 2026). It is one of two apps here that describe an ad route: its Italian App Store listing (read September 30, 2026) says you can keep going by watching ads or collecting daily bonuses instead of buying coins. On its website, Don't Miss Me When I'm Gone played episodes 1 to 13 free on October 6, 2026, then asked 60 coins an episode. How many ads one episode takes isn't stated.

Best for: viewers who'd rather spend time on ads than money. ReelShort review

4. NetShort

NetShort has 4.7 from 214K US ratings (October 2, 2026), and its description lists free viewing supported by ads, with a VIP that offers "ad-free viewing where available". On netshort.com we watched as a visitor, without signing in: the series we opened on October 6, 2026 had episodes 1 to 9 free, then 50 coins (about $0.50) each. Its weekly VIP starts at $19.99 on the US store, so use the free nine fully before you look at plans.

Best for: trying a series with no account at all. NetShort review

5. FlickReels

FlickReels holds 4.8 from 105,513 US ratings (read October 6, 2026) and has been on the App Store since July 2024. Its website played episodes 1 to 10 of the series we checked on October 6, 2026; from episode 12 the page said you need the app. The site doesn't sell memberships, so the free part on the web is a sample, not a separate plan. In the app, coin packs start at $4.99.

Best for: a ten-episode taste in a computer browser. FlickReels review

6. Shortical

Shortical has 4.7 from 53,798 US ratings (October 6, 2026). On its website, the Room Service page said "Episodes 1–13 are free", and at about 110 seconds an episode that is roughly 24 minutes before the paywall. The site also sells its own plans, which you cancel in your Shortical profile, not in Apple or Google settings. In the app, the US listing shows weekly VIP at $9.99 and $19.99.

Best for: the longest free opening among the series we opened. Shortical review

7. CandyJar

CandyJar, from Inkitt GmbH in Berlin, holds 4.8 from 49,434 US ratings (October 6, 2026). Its help center (articles updated September 24, 2026) says you get one free episode every 24 hours plus one-time bonus coins, with no ads and no free trial. Auto-Unlock is on by default and spends coins by itself, so switch it off if you only want the free episode. Subscription refunds are possible within 7 days, per the same help center.

Best for: a slow, ad-free daily episode. CandyJar review

8. PineDrama

PineDrama is TikTok's own short drama app, released in December 2025, with 4.85 from about 47,750 US ratings. On October 6, 2026 its App Store listing showed no in-app purchases at all, while its Google Play listing showed items from $2.99 to $199.99. App Store reviews often mention frequent ads; that comes from reviewers, not from the listing. Episodes run 1 to 3 minutes, with subtitles and dubbing, per its own FAQ.

Best for: iPhone users who want an app with no purchases listed. PineDrama review

9. StoryReel

StoryReel arrived on the App Store in April 2026 and holds 4.8 from 46,541 US ratings (October 6, 2026). It is rated 18+. The app has daily check-in rewards, and its website plays the first episodes of each series: 11 on one series we checked, fewer than 10 on another, then a "Get the App" button. In the app, the Weekly Pass Pro is listed from $7.99 to $24.99 on the US store.

Best for: adults sampling a series on the web first. StoryReel review

10. VibeShort

VibeShort holds 4.7 from 46,267 US ratings (October 6, 2026) and is rated 18+. Its website played the first 6 episodes free on both series we checked that day. You can earn bonus coins, but its terms (updated July 28, 2026) say bonus coins expire, so spend them rather than saving them. Its listing calls it an AI-powered app, and the US Weekly Pass Pro runs from $4.99 to $19.99.

Best for: a quick look at AI-made dramas. VibeShort review

11. FreeReels

FreeReels isn't on the App Store, so it closes the list. On Google Play (read October 6, 2026) it has 4.7 from 1.96 million reviews and more than 100 million downloads, and its description promises "Always free to access — no subscriptions, no limits". The listing is labeled "Contains ads" and still shows in-app purchases from $0.99 to $119.99 per item. On iPhone, the same publisher, SKYWORK AI, offers DramaReels instead.

Best for: Android users who accept ads in exchange for no subscription. FreeReels review

How we picked

An app made this list only if an official source states a free route: the store listing, the developer's help center, or episodes we played on the developer's own website, read between October 2 and 15, 2026. DramaBox, ShortMax, DramaWave, DramaShorts, My Drama, MoboReels, FlareFlow, StardustTV, Playlet and Kalos TV are free to download, but none of those sources says how far the free part goes, so they're left out rather than guessed at. Order follows US App Store rating counts. The full method is on how we rate, and every app sits side by side on the compare page and the main ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Which short drama app is completely free?

None of the eleven is free with no strings. FreeReels comes closest on paper: its Google Play description says "no subscriptions, no limits", but it runs on ads and still lists purchases up to $119.99. PineDrama shows no purchases on the US App Store, yet its Google Play listing does. Everywhere else, free covers a set of opening episodes, a daily episode or an ad route, and the rest is paid.

Is there a free short drama app without ads?

CandyJar's help center says it has no ads: you get one free episode every 24 hours plus some one-time bonus coins, and there is no free trial. NetShort, ReelShort, FreeReels and VibeShort all describe ads as part of the free experience, and PineDrama's App Store reviewers often mention them. If ads are the deal-breaker, CandyJar is the documented option among these eleven.

Can I watch free short dramas without downloading an app?

Yes, on some. On October 6, 2026 the websites of GoodShort, ReelShort, NetShort, FlickReels, Shortical, StoryReel and VibeShort all played free episodes in a browser, from 6 to 13 depending on the app and series. TotalShort does not play in a browser; it's an Android app for now. Our guide to watching short dramas online lists what each site allows.

How many episodes are free on TotalShort?

The first 8 episodes of every series, then 1 free episode a day for each series. With six series, that is 48 episodes before you pay or wait. A paid episode is 30 coins (€0.30), and coins never expire. VIP exists too, at €5.99 a week or €59.99 a year, billed by Google Play with no free trial that turns into a charge.

No. Copies of these series on unofficial sites, modded APKs and chat channels infringe the makers' rights and are a common route to malware and stolen card details. Every free route on this page comes from the official app, store listing or developer website. Install only from the App Store or Google Play.

How do I stop free episodes turning into charges?

Block or gate purchases before you start: Screen Time on iPhone, purchase verification in Google Play on Android. Read the billing period on the payment sheet, since that is the figure that counts, and prices change by country and over time. If you do subscribe, set a reminder, and cancel in Apple or Google settings, because deleting the app cancels nothing. Our guide to coins explains how unlock prices work.
